Maundy is the name of the Christian rite of foot washing. The Latin mandatum (the origin of the English word "mandate”) begins the phrase "Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos." ("A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you.") This statement in the Gospel of John (13:34) is Jesus explaining to the Apostles the significance of his action of washing their feet.
Unity of Wilmington’s Maundy Thursday service will include a foot/hand washing ceremony as well as the traditional communion service. The service will be largely contemplative as we focus on the Idea that the deep meaning of Holy Week is to teach only love and experience being part of the Divine Love we identify as God in us.
