How We Pray

Prayer is at the foundation of Unity.

One of the ways we fulfill our soul’s connection is through prayer. Prayer is the foundation upon which Unity was established and is at the heart of every aspect of our spiritual community. Affirmative prayer is the highest form of creative thought. It transforms thoughts that are not for ones highest good to uplifting thoughts. Through affirmative prayer we are reminded that our good is here now. Prayer is a time to commune with God; to deepen our personal relationship, connecting us to our heart. God is love and prayer elevates us and opens our heart for connection to our source. Prayer prepares us for meditation, this is where we are quiet to experience the presence of God. In Unity prayer and meditation are interconnected, our awareness is heightened and elevated which can transform our lives.

The Power of Prayer

Unity was founded on affirmative, life-giving prayer.

The use of affirmative prayer started with Unity's co-founder, Myrtle Fillmore in the late 1800s. Myrtle was the mother of three young boys when she was diagnosed with an illness of which there was no known cure at the time. She began studying "mind science" and attended a lecture by E.B. Weeks where she heard, "You are a child of God and you cannot inherit sickness." She took these words to heart and sequestered herself for many months speaking words of praise to every part of her body. Eventually she was healed from her illness. Her husband Charles Fillmore, upon seeing her success, also began praying in the same manner and was cured of a withered hip.

Myrtle was so excited by her new relationship with prayer that she began to pray for other people. Eventually she and Charles began holding prayer circles in their home and this small group grew into the Unity movement and Silent Unity, which is the longest running prayer ministry in the world. Prayer is still available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through Silent Unity.

The Prayer for Protection

The Light of God surrounds us.
I am Light.
The Love of God enfolds us.
I am Love.
The Power of God protects us.
I am Power.
The Presence of God watches over us.
I am Presence.
Wherever we are, God is, I am divine.

Aramaic Lord’s Prayer

Father-Mother!
Birther and Breath of All.
Create a space inside us
And fill it with your presence.
Let Oneness now prevail.
Your one desire then moves through
Ours, as energy fills all forms.
Give us this day our physical and spiritual
Nourishment.
Untangle the knots of error that
Bind us, as we release others.
Don’t let appearances make us
Forgetful of the Source, but free us
To act appropriately.
From You, age to age, flow the
Glorious harmonies of Life.
May these statements be fertile
Ground from which our future grows.
